Newman University’s Senior Lecturer in Sport and Health, Dr Stefan Lawrence, featured on BBC One’s Football Focus this weekend.

As part of a LGBT+ history month series, the programme included a segment reflecting on why players in the women’s game feel able to discuss their sexuality, whereas in the men’s game players often do not. Chloe Morgan, Crystal Palace Women’s Goalkeeper, presented the segment and spoke to Leyton Orient Goalkeeper, Lawrence Vigouroux, as well as former English Goalkeeper David James, Manager of Ashford Town, Luke Tuffs and Dr Stefan Lawrence.

Part of Dr Lawrence’s research expertise focuses equality and diversity in sport governance, and discourses of masculinities in popular culture and football cultures. Stefan has also published on a number of topics and across a variety disciplines.

On the programme, which aired on Saturday 27th February, Stefan spoke to Chloe about the differences between the women’s and men’s game and Stefan spoke about the history of both games and the reasons why this is impacted inclusivity in the sport.
