Exciting Work to Transform Ryland Quad Underway
Phase 1 of a huge transformational project at Birmingham Newman University’s Campus is well underway.
Significant work to develop the Ryland Quad, sitting at the centre of the University’s campus, is on track for completion at the end of November 2024.
Developments to transform this exciting green space will be home to a new outdoor learning area. Raised Lawns will be installed, and new seating areas will create a new tranquil area for socialising and working.
The extensive landscaping scheme is part of University’s ambitious Estates masterplan to improve the campus environment and enhance the experience for students, staff, and visitors.
In addition to these exciting developments, students have been invited to play a key role in shaping the future of the campus by naming a new, onsite catering trailer, and what food it will serve. The new outlet will provide convenient food options for the university community.

Construction underway
Contractors are currently working to remove vegetation in the Quad, in preparation for landscaping, and the St John Henry Newman statue has been carefully removed ready to be relocated to his new revamped home. A viewing area that overlooks the Quad will soon be available.
Whilst work is underway, designated walkways have been established to ensure safe and easy access around the restricted areas. Temporary signage has been put up around the building area to assist safe movement around the campus, minimising disruption.
Elsewhere on campus, landscaping work around the Edgbaston area is now completed with the fencing, turf, and hedging being installed. The main contractor has now withdrawn from this area.
Next year work will begin at the front of the campus, where a pedestrianised boulevard will replace visitor parking. This upgrade will improve connections and create a more inviting entrance.
