Following successful application to the Turing Scheme, Final Year History student Zayb Nazir had a wonderful time spending 4 weeks at Birmingham Newman University’s partner university, VIA University College (VIA), based in Aarhus in Denmark.

The theme of Zayb’s summer school was the United Nation’s (UN) Sustainable Development Goals, with participants getting a unique opportunity to gain knowledge whilst solving real life problems related to the Goals.

Over 18 different nationalities participated in the two summer schools that VIA offered this year.

Alongside the academic programme, Zayb also signed up for the busy social programme which included attending an Aarhus FC football match, boat trips at sea, cultural and sight-seeing tours and a 4-hour hike in the countryside followed by a meal cooked in a forest camp.

Zayb’s Turing Experience

Here’s a summary of what Zayb had to say about his experience:

“I’ve met amazing people and the course is really interesting and delivered in a very supportive atmosphere.

The course is well organised and, coupled with the social program, really is amazing.

I’ve made a lot of friends from different places which has made the experience that much more enjoyable.

I’ve gained independence, learned more about the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals and how they contribute to society, worked with international students on presentations and participated in activities outside of my normal comfort zone.

Aarhus is a beautiful city, and Danish people are always ready to help you”.
