Earlier this week (Monday 18th March 2024), a group of forward-thinking BA Professional Policing students from Birmingham Newman University stepped into the future of law enforcement and public safety during an exclusive visit to the prestigious National Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Centre, at the College of Policing.

In an era where global threats are as diverse as they are complex, the need for cutting-edge defence mechanisms and well-trained protectors has never been more pronounced.

The visit opened with insightful talks from seasoned experts at the centre, shedding light on the multifaceted roles and responsibilities that define the CBRN domain.

These discussions provided students with a profound understanding of how the centre’s activities are intertwined with national security measures and the pivotal role they could play in safeguarding the community.

But what does it truly feel like to stand on the front lines, equipped to face challenges that most can barely imagine?

Our students got a taste of this reality as they were given the opportunity to don and test the state-of-the-art equipment used by officers from the centre.

From protective suits that shield against hazardous materials to advanced detection devices that sniff out potential threats, students experienced first-hand the sophisticated arsenal at the disposal of today’s CBRN officers.

As our students navigated through the demonstrations, it was clear that this was more than just an educational trip. It was a glimpse into a potential future, where they could be the ones making a difference in the face of adversity.

For those aspiring to shape the future of public safety, the path is as challenging as it is rewarding. The day at the National CBRN Centre was inspiring and inciteful for the next generation of law enforcement professionals from Birmingham Newman University dedicated to protecting our communities and country.
