In memory of Bishop Christopher Budd RIP

03/04/2023 by Newman Staff

We were sorry to hear of the recent death (1st April 2023) of Bishop Christopher Budd, retired Bishop of Plymouth and former lecturer here at Newman. Bishop Christopher was always very proud of his association with us and of the honorary life fellowship he received from us in 2001, so much so that we know he had photos of that occasion on display in his home. We were delighted that Bishop Christopher was able to be part of our 50th Anniversary celebrations joining us for a special Mass at St Chad’s Cathedral in October 2018. During his homily he spoke with great warmth about his time on the teaching staff. He was last in touch with us when he heard the news of former Principal Pamela Taylor’s death as he offered us his prayers and remembered fondly how Pam was principal when he received his fellowship.

Bishop Christopher taught at Newman before going on to become the Catholic Bishop of Plymouth from 1986 – 2013 and also an active member of the Bishop’s Conference department for Social Justice. During his retirement he divided his time between his base in Lyme Regis and the Isles of Scilly.

Our prayers and sympathies are with his family, friends and Diocese of Plymouth. May Bishop Christopher rest in peace.

During these days we also join with the Archdiocese of Birmingham in praying for the repose of the soul of Bishop David McGough, who served this diocese as both priest and Bishop. He was a great supporter of Education and Chaplaincy and proud of part Newman played in both these arenas.

May Bishop Christopher and Bishop David both rest in peace.
