To mark the occasion of National Storytelling Week this week, read this heart-warming, nostalgic story sent in from our current student Kat Foley.
If you’ve got a Newman tale to share, a favourite memory; an unforgettable moment or perhaps even a Newman love story, please send an email to marketing@newman.ac.uk
John Foley from Liverpool and Finula Manning from Luton both came to Newman University in 1970 to study to be teachers.
John was in the Newman football team for the three years of his study, becoming Captain and Manager in the final year, where Newman football team went on to win the double – League and cup.
Whilst Finula joined the basketball and drama club. Together they ran the Film Society showing weekly films for students (it was only £2 for the year!).
They made many friends and were always up for going to the Newman balls… (typical students!)
A relationship blossomed between the two and they started dating. They got engaged at the end of their first year and went on to qualify as teachers in July 1973, where they both became teachers in primary schools.
In 1980 they decided to get married and where better than the place they first met.
On June 14th they were married by Father Eamonn Clarke at the Chapel in Newman University.
Their teaching journey continued, and they went on to become Headteachers and the schools they ran were deemed ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.
They had two daughters who were both baptised at the Newman Chapel once again being welcomed by Father Eamonn Clarke.
Now their youngest daughter (me) has come to study Applied Humanities at Newman University, currently in her final year.
And the legacy of Newman lives on…
