Newman unveil brand new Students’ Union

Newman University is delighted to announce the opening of our new Students’ Union, in readiness for new and returning students joining us for the 2022/23 academic year.

Located at the heart of our Birmingham campus, the much-improved Students’ Union space is an embodiment of the core values of the SU, which strives to place students at the centre of all activity.

An exposed and easily accessible entrance is one of the key developments in the build, reflecting the ‘open-door’ policy of the SU, where students can speak to their elected student representatives in a safe and sociable space.

Adorned with state-of-the-art furnishings, the new Students’ Union has been designed to help students feel comfortable and welcomed when engaging with course colleagues and the SU Executive Team.

President of Newman Students’ Union, Zoe Harrison, commented: “We are so grateful to the University for their constant belief and support in us as a Union. We have thoroughly enjoyed our first few weeks in the office and putting our own touch on it. With it being the first few weeks of the semester, we have loved having students come in and out the office and spending time in there.

“This is a space that we want our students to enjoy being in, feel safe in and know that they can come and see us at anytime!”

The creation of the new SU is reflective of the Newman’s commitment to student representation and the growing partnership between the University and the Students’ Union. The development follows the University’s collaboration with the SU Executive Team to create a Student Futures Manifesto, looking at ways to secure successful student futures post-pandemic.

Richard Medcalf, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Students) said: “Newman is well known as a student-centred university, and this new facility quite literally puts students at the heart of what we do on campus. The creation of this new space for Newman Students’ Union is a significant milestone in the history of the Union, and we look forward to seeing more students than ever benefitting from the activities of the Union in the years to come.”

The re-location of the new SU has facilitated the creation of a brand new Student Helpdesk, with representatives from the Academic Registry team available to support students as they enrol at Newman and commence their studies.
