University wins bronze accreditation for sustainable travel plan with Transport for West Midlands

Birmingham Newman University, in collaboration with Transport for West Midlands, has developed a comprehensive travel plan aimed at promoting sustainable transportation for staff and students. This initiative highlights the University’s commitment to making eco-friendly travel the preferred option for commuting to and from the university. Efforts have been recognised and the university has been awarded with a ‘Good Travel Plan’ Bronze accreditation.
The sustainable travel plan includes various ongoing projects designed to facilitate green commuting. Key features include:
- the installation of electric charging points for electric vehicles
- bike shelters
- active promotion of sustainable travel through the university social media channel, NewmanGoesGreen.
- real-time bus travel information
- maintenance sessions to support cyclists with host Dr. Bike
Speaking about receiving the Bronze accreditation, Lucy Clarke, Environmental Advisor at Birmingham Newman University, commented:
“We are continually working to make transport here at Newman more sustainable. That’s why working with people from Transport for West Midlands is so crucial in ensuring our students and staff have the best transport options available to them, while ensuring the environment is looked after as well. These travel plans push us to keep investing in our transport options and show how well we as a university are doing in encouraging sustainable travel, with bike schemes for staff, electric charging points, bike shelters, and promotion of public transport.”

This accreditation is a big encouragement for the university, as we strive to improve modes of transport for students and staff, with the environmental impacts at the forefront of decision making.
