Biography
Andy joined Birmingham Newman University in August 2024 as a Senior Lecturer in Professional Policing. Andy served with West Midlands Police (WMP) for over 21 years, where he held the rank of Police Sergeant; prior to that, he had a 14-year career in the British Army. 18 years of his policing career in WMP was spent as a team leader on the Firearms Operations Unit’s tactical team. During this time, he dealt with offenders who may have been be in possession of firearms or who were deemed otherwise so dangerous in criminality or counter terrorism environments. He was also a Police Firearms Instructor and delivered tactical training to firearms officers as well as advising commanders during firearms operations. He left WMP in 2021 having completed an MA in Managing and Leading People at Coventry University
After transitioning to academia, Andy has been deeply involved in policing education, most recently at Staffordshire University as a lecturer for just under 3 years. Whilst there he was responsible for leading and managing modules within the PCDA and Degree Holder Entry Programme (DHEP) as well as Research Supervising year 3 students. His focus on academic quality management and student engagement, combined with his practical experience and innovative use of technology-enhanced learning, has earned him respect in both educational and policing circles. In support of his current role Andy has completed MA in Education at Staffordshire University.
Andy also has a passion for community wellbeing, helping to raise funds for local charities; he is the fundraising trustee for Birmingham Dogs Home and a member of the NSPCC West Midlands Business Board.

Research Interests: Andy is currently working on a research paper looking at the transition of military personnel as they join the police and become Firearms Officers, he will also be looking to progress his research on Police Education and Student engagement which formed part of his MA in Education dissertation.
