Janet is a lecturer on the primary ITE undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, specifically working on the broad curriculum subjects of Art and Design Technology. Her role also involves being an academic mentor and a partnership tutor for trainees on primary school experience.  Prior to joining Newman University, Janet spent almost 20 years working in primary schools across the West Midlands and Worcestershire working as a Key Stage 1 / Key Stage 2 teacher.  Janet worked as a teaching assistant for several years before qualifying to become a primary teacher. She then taught across both key stages and was at the same time responsible as a subject co-ordinator for the curriculum areas of Design Technology and Music. Janet qualified as a Maths Specialist Primary Teacher in 2014 and was then also part of the school numeracy team ensuring full implementation of the maths curriculum throughout both key stages.

Whilst working as a teacher Janet supervised and mentored many trainee teachers on placement and it was following these positive experiences that Janet decided to branch out and develop her teaching skills in higher education. Janet joined Newman in 2015 where she now works alongside other professional colleagues to support students through their primary teacher training programmes.

Since joining Newman in 2015 Janet has lectured and mentored on primary teacher training programmes, both postgraduate and undergraduate ,and she has also represented the University as a moderator when working in partnership with a SCITT (school centred initial teacher training) cluster.

In 2017 Janet completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education at Newman University, and she is currently undertaking her final research dissertation in order to achieve an MA in Education.


Research Interests

Janet has recently researched into the teaching of design technology and similar creative subjects and investigated how teacher confidence and prior experiences can affect teaching.

Her current research area towards her MA in Education relates to the use of technology within the teaching setting and how this impacts and can affect the relationship between students and lecturers.


Janet teaches on both undergraduate and postgraduate ITE modules, she particularly enjoys planning and delivering very practical hands-on sessions which provide students with an opportunity to try out activities which they can then adapt for their own classroom practice.

Janet also focuses on developing subject knowledge in Art and Design technology, and understanding the pedagogies and skills related to these thematic areas.

Janet also teaches on parts of the EPS module where she is able to reflect on her previous school experience to discuss themes such as classroom management, behaviour policies, and inclusion in schools.

Janet is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and also a TLA (Teaching & Learning Academy) verifier.
