Why study abroad?

Studying abroad is a brilliant way to broaden your horizons. You’ll build confidence, experience new cultures, and gain skills that employers value-like adaptability, independence and global awareness.

As a Birmingham Newman student, you can apply to spend a semester at one of our partner universities, or take part in shorter programmes like summer schools.

Funding your experience

We apply for Turing Scheme funding each year to help support students studying or working abroad. This funding is designed to contribute to your costs, though you may need to cover some expenses yourself. The amount available depends on your destination and the type of placement.

• Our Overseas Experience Coordinator will be in touch—usually within 14 days—with next steps.
• Opportunities for 2026 will be advertised from October.

Turing FAQs for students

1. What is the Turing scheme?

The Turing scheme is a UK government scheme which provides students with the opportunity to undertake study or work placements overseas. The Turing scheme is global and includes destinations worldwide, subject to travel advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). The minimum placement duration is 28 days.

2. Who is eligible to apply?

All undergraduate and postgraduate students studying on Newman courses, including part time students, can apply. Recent graduates are also eligible provided that the application is made whilst still enrolled at the university and that the placement takes place within 12 months after graduation.

3. Where could I go and how many places are there?

Opportunities for Turing activities in summer 2025 are being planned in a wide range of destinations, including Austria, Denmark, Germany, Japan, Poland, Spain, and the USA. For further details, email: goabroad@newman.ac.uk or fill in the overseas experience application form.

5. What funding is available?

Funding amounts vary depending on a set of criteria, including student household income and the placement duration and destination. More information will be made available at the start of the autumn semester.

7. Will the University help me plan my trip abroad?

The Overseas Experience Coordinator will guide you throughout the process, helping with required documentation and practical matters, for example finding accommodation. A detailed risk assessment will need to be completed before travel and you will need to be involved in this process by researching your destination before you go.

8. Does Turing cover online courses?

No. Turing funding only covers physical placements which take place outside your normal country of residence.

9. Do I need to speak the language of the country I am travelling to?

This is not usually required but may be useful in work placements. For study placements, most of Newman’s partner universities teach their courses in English so knowledge of the host country language is not required. However, it is a good idea to try and learn at least a few basic phrases of your host country’s language before you travel to make settling in easier.

10. How do I apply?
