School Direct

At Birmingham Newman University, we’re proud to work in partnership with schools to offer School Direct teacher training routes.

Here’s everything you need to know to get started.

  • Step 1: Explore your options

Use the Department for Education’s Find Service to browse available School Direct courses.

    Top Tip

Make a note of the Training Provider Code and Training Programme Code – you’ll need these when you apply.

  • Step 2: Apply online

Once you’ve chosen your course(s), apply through the DfE Apply service. You can select up to three courses – with Birmingham Newman, a lead school, or a mix of both.

All applicants must meet our standard entry requirements.

What happens next?

Many School Direct places are offered through school partnerships, with one school acting as the lead. Your application will be reviewed by both the school and Newman University.

If shortlisted, the school will lead the interview process, focusing on your potential to become an inspiring teacher.

Preparing your application

Make sure your application includes:

  • A strong personal statement that shows your passion for teaching
  • Two referees who can support your application

Tip: Let your referees know in advance — your application won’t be considered until both references are submitted.

Interview process

If invited to interview, you might be asked to:

  • Teach part of a lesson
  • Work with a small group of pupils
  • Deliver a short presentation

Remember: We’re not expecting you to be a fully trained teacher yet. We’re looking for your potential – your ability to engage, motivate, and connect with young people.

After the interview

If successful, you’ll receive a conditional offer, subject to meeting our entry requirements.
