Welcome to Birmingham Newman’s Sports & Fitness Centre

At Birmingham Newman, we believe in supporting the wellbeing of our whole community – students, staff, alumni, and local residents – through accessible, high-quality fitness and sports facilities.

Our centre includes a Cardio Suite, Resistance Training Suite, and Group Cycle Studio, designed to help you achieve a wide range of fitness goals in a friendly and supportive environment. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to enhance your training, our facilities are here to help you thrive.

We also offer a variety of sports spaces for hire, including:

  • A newly refurbished Sports Hall
  • A FIFA-standard 3G pitch
  • A Squash Court

Fitness suite highlights

Our Fitness Suite features premium Technogym equipment and purpose-built air conditioning for a comfortable workout experience. Facilities include:

  • 22 cardiovascular stations: treadmills, bikes, spin bikes, cross-trainers, rowers, steppers, ski erg, Stair Master, Assault Air Bike
  • Resistance machines: Leg Press, Chest Press, Low Row, Shoulder Press, and more
  • Strength training: 2 multifunctional half racks, lifting platforms, dumbbells up to 38kg, plate-loaded equipment with 800kg of plates
  • Functional training tools: battle ropes, slam balls, kettlebells, plyo boxes, Swiss balls

*Memberships allow access to the fitness suites during opening hours; further sports facility use, personal training and exercise classes are not included in the prices.

Free induction

Our professional and qualified staff are available for free scheduled inductions for the Fitness and Sports Performance Suites from 6pm on weekday evenings and during opening hours on weekends. To book or enquire about induction times, please drop in during opening hours, call or email the Sports Centre. This process should take 20 – 30 minutes depending on your level of experience.

Payment

We prefer payments by debit or credit card for memberships and facility charges. Payment must be made in person at the Sports Centre reception.

Birmingham Newman Sport: Enrich your student experience by engaging in sport

Sport at Birmingham Newman is run by the University and Birmingham Newman Sport is the department that co-ordinates the sporting and recreational needs of students.

Birmingham Newman Sport not only offers recreational sessions for students that just want to enjoy an active lifestyle and have fun, but is also promoting competition within the University and also with other Higher Education institutions at the British University and College Sport (BUCS) national competitions, across a number sports. Delivery of recreational sport and the promotion of physical activity is supported by Newman Students’ Union.

Opportunities to build leadership skills

Each university sports club has a student in the capacity of Captain, Vice-Captain and Social Secretary. Roles of responsibility within the sports teams are offered to students and can be a great way to build leadership skills or to be involved in the development of a sports club. For further information on any available roles for the 2025/26 year please contact James Westwood (j.c.westwood@staff.newman.ac.uk), Student Sport & Physical Activity Coordinator.

Competitive sport At Birmingham Newman

Our competitive sport season runs from October to the end of March, culminating in a Varsity sports event in partnership with University of Wolverhampton and University College Birmingham.

Individual sports

We support entries in to the competitive events that BUCS hold for individual sports. In the past this has included Athletics, Boxing, Cycling, Golf and Judo. Please get in touch for further details and for event dates. Please note that BUCS will have entry criteria for events, so you will need to have experience of playing at a competitive standard in that sport.
