Welcome to the Foundation Degree in Integrative Counselling and Congratulations on your place on the programme. You will be taught by lecturers who are experienced therapists during your Foundation Degree Programme. This will enable you to learn through experiential exercises with your peers and taught presentations and tasks given by your lecturer.

In your first week of the programme you will have your first induction session within your first taught session of the programme. This will then be supplemented by further induction activities which will be included as part of your taught sessions during the first semester.

You can email Programme Lead, Dr Tara Morrey, with any questions you have about studying this course: tara.morrey@staff.newman.ac.uk.

In September 2022 you will be taking your first modules on your Foundation Degree programme. You will have your first module on theory called ‘Theoretical Perspectives for Counselling 1’ where you will explore person-centred and psychodynamic theories and apply key concepts to case studies. You will also have a Professional Counselling Skills module. In this module you will be taught counselling skills and practice counselling through triad work with your peers.

In this semester you will also have a Personal and Professional Development Group (PPD). In this session you will be engaging with others in the group and reflecting on your relationship with both yourself and with others in the group.

Thursdays 10am-5:15pm

Full details of your individual academic timetable will be available on mynewman after you have completed online enrolment and set up your student login.

The following books are essential reading for students in semester 1 of Year 1, so would be worth purchasing and starting to read in advance:

Cottrell, S., Critical Thinking Skills: Developing effective analysis and argument (Palgrave Macmillan 2011)

Reeves, A., An Introduction to Counselling and Psychotherapy: from theory to practice 3rd Edition (Sage, 2022)

Membership of your professional association (BACP) is a requirement from year 1; currently this is £82 a year.

Students must also undertake 40 hours of personal therapy over the course, at least 12 hours of which must be completed before the beginning of the second semester in year 2.

Personal therapy costs can vary considerably but would normally be in the range of £35-55 per hour. Students can select their own therapist as long as they meet the programme requirements and so they will have some choice in how much they pay.

Students on the programme must complete 120 hours of clinical placement work and are responsible for any travel costs incurred in this.

Regular supervision is a programme and professional requirement. Some placements provide free supervision in exchange for the student seeing clients, but many do not.

Some students will have to supplement the supervision their placement provides with private supervision for which they must pay, and some may need to find and pay an external supervisor for all of their required supervision hours. The typical cost of supervision is currently £35-£55.

Students apply for their own placements (with our help) so have a choice within the realms of what is available.

Until a placement is obtained we do not know how many hours of supervision will need to be paid for.
