Dr Adam Benkwitz

Adam Benewitz

Adam is a Reader at Newman, having joined the university in 2015. His research interests include applied mental health research based in community and service settings, and personal recovery.

Dr Samantha Birch

Sam is a Lecturer in Health and Social Care, and leads a range of modules relating to health, anatomy and physiology, and community interventions. Sam started working at Newman in 2019, and also acts as a postgraduate research supervisor.

Bonnie Bullivant

Bonnie Bullivant is a Lecturer in Health and Social Care, and she leads the clinical skills modules at Newman, based in the Health Sciences Lab. Bonnie is a former research nurse, and she began working at Newman in 2016 and is currently undertaking her doctoral research at Warwick University.

In the Health and Social Care subject area we always use a wide range of innovative and engaging resources and methods of teaching. During your course we will be combining face to face lectures and interactive seminars, with pre-recorded and live online content and online resources to help to scaffold and support your learning. We are also particularly focused on evidence-based learning, so we will be engaging you in the latest research, policy and practice from industry. This is in addition to your own directed learning tasks and extensive reading that you will do outside of the taught sessions.

The semester one (from September to January) modules for each course are listed below:

HEU411 – Dimensions of Health and Social Care: This module introduces the concepts of health and social care and will explore these broad ranging concepts at individual, community and societal levels. Presenting health as a dynamic term and; the concept of care as a multifarious one, this module will guide students into critical engagement with a range of discipline related issues and case studies. The development of study skills will be an important and integrated feature of this module. It will provide the opportunity for students to establish an approach to learning which assists in promoting analytical thinking, engaged reading and academic writing.

HEU412 – Introduction to Social Policy: The module will enable students to explore the historical and contemporary issues in social policy. The module will introduce students to: the theoretical, national, regional and local socio-political perspectives that inform both social policy and the provision of health and social care: and to a range of legislation relevant to the provision of these services. The module will further explore the contemporary emphasis placed upon public and service user involvement.

HEU413 – Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology: The module will offer students the opportunity to learn about the structure and function of the human body. The students will explore optimal system functions of the body and will also explore the dietary and lifestyle factors that have been shown to contribute to the healthy functioning of the human body.
