Welcome to the BA (Hons) Counselling Studies Top-Up. Congratulations on your place on the programme. You will be taught by lecturers who are experienced therapists.

In the first week of your programme, you will have an induction session on Friday 23rd, September with other induction activities to follow during your first semester.

Your Programme Leader is Linda Luckhurst in the Department of Counselling and Psychotherapy. You can contact Linda with any questions you may have about studying this course: l.luckhurst@staff.newman.ac.uk.

In Semester 1, September 2022 you will begin by studying Research in Counselling. In this module you will become familiar with research methodologies and methods and associated ethical considerations. You will learn how to develop your own research proposal and how to approach writing a literature review. In addition, you will choose one option from: Therapeutic Approaches to Supporting Children and Families; Mindfulness-based Approaches to Wellbeing; Bereavement and Loss. Teaching will take the form of lectures and seminars, including group discussions.

A core text for Research in Counselling is Sanders, P. and Wilkins, P. (2010) First Steps in Practitioner Research. Ross-on-Wye: PCCS Books. You might like to peruse this before you begin your studies. For example, you might read Chapter 1 Introducing Research which covers some material that will be covered in the taught module.
