Accounting & Finance

Congratulations on your successful admission into the University! We are excited to welcome you to the Accounting and Finance Degree Programme where you will be co-learning with us for the next three years of study.

We have designed the welcome week to enable you settle down easily and integrate into our community of learners with less stress. During this week, you will have the opportunity to meet with the lecturers in the programme who will be teaching and supporting you throughout your study with us. You will also meet with our students who are at various levels of their studies with us and benefit from the opportunity of asking them questions about their learning experiences in the degree programme.

During this week, we are available to guide you through your registration and onboarding process in the university. We will also hold a face-2-face on-campus induction session with all admitted students to share our expectations with them as well as understand their ambitions and motivations for deciding to pursue a degree qualification.

Timetable

Semester 1

Week beginning 22 September 2025:

  • Mondays: 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm
  • Tuesdays: 9am to 11am and 12pm to 2pm
  • Thursdays: 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 3pm

Full details of your individual academic timetable, including Semester 2 timetable which may differ, will be available via your university email calendar after you have completed online enrolment and set up your student login.

Your teaching team

Chinedu Aghanenu

Chinedu is the program leader and teaches a couple of modules from level 4 to level 6. He will be leading teaching on fundamentals of financial accounting, fundamentals of management accounting, introduction to finance and investment, and financial reporting in the comping academic year.

Chinedu holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics; Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and key professional qualifications in accounting such as ACCA and ACA. He is currently a doctoral researcher who is researching towards a PhD in strategic management.

Japheth Jev

Japheth Jev (JJ) leads teaching and learning on core finance, investment and technology modules as well as audit and assurance. In the coming session, Japheth would be anchoring teaching across level 5 and level 6 modules such as banking and international finance, management accounting and decision making, applied case study, business and data analytics, performance management, and audit and assurance.

JJ holds a Bachelor degree in Economics and a master’s degree in Finance and Investment. He is a chartered accountant with multiple professional qualifications such as CIMA, CGMA, and ACA. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He is a doctoral researcher researching towards a PhD in Finance and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Dr. Mohamed Hawela

Mohamed is the programme Leader in the Business management programme whose specialisation include strategy, knowledge management, organisational learning, individuals, groups, and organisational development. He is highly skilled in supporting and nurturing creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

He will be leading teaching and learning in some of the finance and accounting modules that intersect with operational and strategic management of business organizations.

Mohamed holds a Bachelor degree in Hotel management, master of Philosophy, and PhD in Business and Management. He is a seasoned researcher with several publications in high rated journals.

Module delivery

During the semester 1 of your degree programme, you will be taking 3 modules which are: fundamentals of financial accounting, Business and Economic Environment, and Professional skills for Accountants.

We expect you to attend lectures on campus for at least three days per week.

Our teaching and learning approach requires you to engage fully with the study notes and materials we provide as well as make use of the resources- textbooks, ACCA study texts, Exam practice kits in the university library.

This means that you would be fully engaged during lectures as well as pursue personal studies when you are not in the class. All learning notes and materials will be delivered to you through our e-learning system called module. So, stay glued to your module account throughout the semester.

As part of your induction to Birmingham Newman University, our Services Fair is your opportunity to meet the teams who will support you throughout your studies and explore the services available to help you succeed.

You’re welcome to drop in and take part on any of the fair dates — it doesn’t have to be the day of your induction.

  • Make a badge with our Environmental Officer, download the OurNewman app to spin the wheel and win a prize, and join the Library for Q&A activities and their Prize Every Time Lucky Dip.
  • Advice & Wellbeing will be offering stress tests, sound therapy, and an Affirmation Station, while E-Learning invites you to take their “Who You Gonna Call?” quiz for a prize draw entry.
  • Try the Sport team’s exercise bike challenge and visit the Chaplaincy to choose the “word of the day” and share some positivity.

And that’s just the start — there’ll be many more services, activities, and opportunities to explore each day of the fair. Come along, get involved, and make the most of what’s on offer!
