Applied Humanities is built around your interests and goals. We use innovative methods from the humanities combined with academic life coaching. This approach focuses on practical learning, innovation, problem-solving, and preparing you for a dynamic job market.

Applied Humanities is arranged into modules. You’ll study six modules over the course of your degree: three in the first year, and three in the second year. You’ll work on one module at a time, and each module is broken up into units of study.

Each week, you’ll spend around 45-50 hours working on your online degree. You’ll spend time on:

  • directed activities in our online learning platform.
  • directed experiential activities, when you will be learning by doing.
  • scheduled coaching sessions, including individual coaching and group coaching.
  • self-directed activities involving lifelong and life-wide learning.

A typical week in Applied Humanities

You can see a full breakdown of a typical week during the first year of your study:

Online materials (8 hours per week)

Explore online micro-lectures, interactive material and more, as and when suits you.

Directed experiential activities (2 hours per week)

Learn by doing: a directed activity to enable you to connect your study to real world experiences

Individual Coaching (30 minutes per month)

A one-to-one meeting with an academic coach, to tailor your study to your goals and career ambitions. Scheduled one per month, at a time to suit you.

Group Coaching (1 hour per month)

A one-hour session live on Teams, at a pre-scheduled time one a month to enable you to connect with your peers, facilitated by a tutor.

Lifelong learning (10 hours per week) & Life-wide learning (29 hours per week)

Self-directed study, enabling you to draw the informal learning opportunities and life experiences from your daily life and incorporate them into your degree and assessed work.

Your study is connected to your professional goals, and both your degree and your career have to be balanced with your commitments to family, friends and work. Whether you’re advancing in your current career or exploring new opportunities, BA Applied Humanities online degree gives you flexibility to work alongside your degree.

Most weeks, you should spend around 45 to 50 hours working toward your degree. Those hours include self-directed lifelong and life-wide learning. This time will include the time you spend at work, with family and friends or in your other roles and responsibilities.

Entry Requirements

We encourage students with any educational background and work experience to enquire and apply, even if they do not meet the stated academic entry requirements.

Typical offers for this programme are based on at least 96 UCAS points.

The University accepts appropriate T Levels as part of its usual entry requirements.

Applying Direct option

You can apply direct to Birmingham Newman University for the full-time route for this course if you have not previously applied to Birmingham Newman University through UCAS and you are not applying to any other universities.

N.B. will need to enter ‘New User’ account details when first accessing this portal.

Course Fees

Annual Tuition for 2024-25 is £10,400  

Annual tuition fees are applicable to the first year of study. The University reserves the right to increase fees for subsequent years to reflect changes in Government funding policies or changes agreed by Parliament.

Modules

Please be aware that, as with any course, there may be changes to the modules delivered.

  1. In this module, you'll build the foundation for your future growth, both personally and professionally. While working on your Personal Development Plan (PDP), you'll also develop important digital and information literacy skills.

  2. In this module, you'll be in charge of your learning journey, creating a path that matches your strengths, interests, and goals. You'll develop habits like self-efficacy, collaboration, and networking, laying the foundation for the rest of your degree and lifelong learning.

  3. This module provides opportunities to connect with professionals and peers through workshops with guest speakers from various sectors. Engage in meaningful discussions, get insights into different landscapes, and build your networks for personal and professional development.
  1. During this module, you will craft a powerful Professional Development Plan (PDP) where you can showcase your CVs, personal statements, and goals. This tailored plan will set you up for success when applying for exciting graduate roles or pursuing further studies and training. By the end of the module, you'll not only master the art of job applications but also possess the skills and confidence needed to excel in your future career.

  2. This module lets you explore the principles and practice of interdisciplinary and interprofessional working. Expect student-led group coaching sessions focusing on peer support and assessment development. Embrace active listening, open communication, and a willingness to share responsibility and knowledge.

  3. During this module, you'll design and deliver a project showcasing how you can use humanities-based approaches in real-life situations. You need to look at your project from a human-centred perspective, thinking about the ethical, social, and cultural aspects. In group coaching, you'll track your idea's progress from start to finish, improving skills like design thinking, project management, teamwork, and communication along the way.
