This BSc Business and Law programme equips students with a foundational understanding of key legal principles that directly impact the business world. As part of the BSc Business and Law degree, students will study three core law modules that complement their business education:

  • Tort Law
    This module introduces the principles of liability and the types of harm that can lead to legal action. Students examine negligence, fault, and various forms of liability (e.g., strict and vicarious), learning how businesses can manage legal risks and respond to claims effectively.

 

  • Employment Law

Focusing on the regulation of employment relationships under English law, this module covers key topics such as dismissal, redundancy, discrimination, and equality. It also introduces international legal standards, helping students understand how businesses must navigate legal responsibilities toward employees.

  • Law of Business Organisations

This module explores the legal foundations of business structures, from sole traders and partnerships to incorporated companies. Students learn about formation, management, and insolvency, gaining insight into how legal frameworks influence business operations and strategic decisions.

9-12 hours of contact time supported with independent and directed study .

Across the programme, students also complete coursework, reports, presentations, debates, and digital artefacts. These varied formats ensure graduates are equipped with the skills and confidence to make an immediate impact in their careers.

Graduates can progress to postgraduate study, including Birmingham Newman University’s Early Career MBA or MSc International Business, to further develop leadership and strategic expertise.

All International Students who apply in 2024/25 will be eligible for the International Excellence Scholarship which will be automatically applied to their offer as a tuition fee reduction.

The University will review tuition fees and increase fees in line with any inflationary uplift as determined by the UK Government, if permitted by law or government policy, in subsequent years of your course. It is anticipated that such increases would be linked to RPI (the Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments).

Modules

  1. The Personal Development for Business Managers and Entrepreneurs module equips students with the essential tools and mindset for success in their university journey and beyond. In the year-long module, students will engage in a dynamic learning experience that intertwines academic skill-building with personal growth.
  2. This module will introduce students to the objective of the tort system and basic principles of liability underpinning tort law to consider some of the various interests that are protected.  The module will explore the acts and omissions that give rise to liability and the type of harm which is actionable and for which compensation can be sought. The module deals with issues of caution and fault within particular types of action in tort, and considers the role of policy in relation to this area of law. The module also considers briefly the relevance of different modes of liability, including strict liability, vicarious liability and contributory negligence, as well as defences, and some of the potential remedies available to an action in tort.
  3. The Marketing module provides students with a foundation in key marketing principles, vital for understanding and navigating the business world. Students will begin by exploring core marketing concepts, including the marketing mix, market segmentation, and target marketing, which are essential for identifying and reaching potential customers.
  4. The module provides a theoretical and practical introduction to the nature and characteristics of business behaviour under conditions of economic certainty and uncertainty. Decisions making process for pricing, production constraints, output, wages. This module covers the fundamental elements of business and management, consumer and behaviour economics of business strategy and firm business decisions. It will provide some empirical applications from a marketing perspective as well as the opportunity to build and improve numerical, mathematical and statistical skills, and apply these to practical problems in the context of business. It will also provide empirical applications and introduce decision on different market structures. Throughout, concepts and applications are made relevant to real world examples.
  5. The Management module introduces students to essential management concepts, principles, and practices that are crucial for effective organisational functioning. Students will begin by defining and explaining key management terminology, principles, and theories, building a solid foundation of management knowledge. The module then delves into the core functions of management, including planning, organising, and leading, highlighting their importance in achieving organisational objectives.
  1. The Organisational Management module builds upon the foundational concepts introduced in the first year, focusing on the individual's role as a manager within an organisation. Throughout the module, students delve into various aspects of managerial responsibility, from management and decision-making to organisational structure and introduction of strategic management.
  2. This is a dynamic Level 5 module designed to immerse students in the exciting world of entrepreneurship and innovation. This module begins by defining and differentiating between the concepts of innovation and entrepreneurship, exploring their vital interrelationship within both business and societal contexts. Students will delve into the key drivers of entrepreneurship, including opportunity recognition, drivers for innovation, market analysis, resource acquisition, and venture financing, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the entrepreneurial landscape.
  3. This module introduces the students to project management methodologies and enables them to acquire technical skills in managing project risk and the key factors that determine project success such as cost, time, and project outcomes.
  4. Examines the regulation of employment relations under English Law. What rights and responsibilities do parties to an employment relationship have towards each other? The module explores all aspects of dismissal, redundancy, discrimination, equality through an examination of pertinent case law. It also, for context examines the international legal framework including international treaties and international institutions such as the International Labour Organisation.
  5. This module introduces students to the various methods of resolving disputes outside the traditional court system. It covers negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and other ADR techniques, emphasizing their practical application and effectiveness in different contexts. The module aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to advise clients on ADR options and to participate effectively in ADR processes.
  6. This module provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of contract law. The module will explore the formation, performance, and enforcement of contracts and remedies for breach of contract. The module aims to develop a critical understanding of the legal rules governing contractual relationships and the ability to apply these rules in practical scenarios.
  7. This dynamic module equips students with the essential tools and insights needed to drive and influence the transformation towards sustainability in the business landscape. Through engaging and practical learning experiences, students will analyse real-world sustainability practices and develop solutions that balance economic, social, and environmental factors.
  1. The Strategy and Leadership module represents the culmination of your academic journey, building upon the foundational knowledge and skills developed in previous modules. This advanced module integrates strategic thinking, leadership understanding, from different lenses within the business, so you understand how the strategy impacts different actors in a business at every level. There is also the focus of personalised academic coaching to help you to communicate how your degree has made you your most employable, and to prepare you for future career success in dynamic and competitive business environments.
  2. The Sustainable Consulting Practice for Modern Business module represents the pinnacle of the students' academic journey in Business Management at Birmingham Newman University, integrating advanced project management techniques with rigorous research methods and sustainable business practices. This transformative module prepares students to address complex business challenges with a focus on sustainability, innovation, and ethical decision-making.
  3. This module is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the contemporary challenges and opportunities facing businesses in the current competitive landscape. Through theoretical frameworks, case studies, and interactive discussions, students will explore key issues such as globalisation, technological disruption, environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and diversity and inclusion.
  4. This module explores the law pertinent to all aspects of business structures from incorporation, through to operation, management and finally insolvency. It examines legal issues related to formation and operation of businesses as a sole trader, various types of partnerships and company legislation.
