This module will further develop students’ knowledge and understanding of coaching pedagogy from a theoretical as well as a practical standpoint. This module will require the application of disciplines within coaching science to practical activities. This is intended to provide an opportunity to approach sport and practitioner problems from an interdisciplinary viewpoint and an opportunity to conduct and present a small scale applied project focusing on a specific sport.

This module takes a holistic, inter-disciplinary approach to understanding how young people and athletes can be developed in and through sport and Physical Education. Incorporating concepts from sport pedagogy, psychology and talent development literatures, students will be encouraged to understand youth and athletic development from holistic point of view, and across the participation-performance spectrum.

Understanding of the major applied techniques used in the biomechanical analysis of sporting activity, such as 3D motion capture, and how these maybe used to improve sports performance and reduce the risk of injury.

You will explore and critically evaluate the latest developments in enhancing physiological performance and the underpinning science behind preparation for and recovery from exercise and performance.

Follow your passions while conducting an independent project. Throughout your final year, this module allows you to conduct an extended piece of work of your choosing.

This module offers you the opportunity to build on your level 5 work placement through the more developed application of a negotiated work-based research project. You will agree with your placement tutor and workplace mentor a brief for a project which addresses a need within the organisation. Learners should complete a minimum of 100 hours in the workplace. It is in the spirit of this module that wherever possible, the focus will be on social or community / sustainable development.

The BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching Top-Up degree at Newman is an opportunity for you to pursue a career across different coaching and teaching settings. The degree will allow you to develop your coaching skills by reflecting upon your practical experiences and apply knowledge of sport science.
The course is taught in dedicated facilities on one campus. The Human performance lab, indoor sports hall, strength and conditioning suite, aerobic conditioning suite, group exercise studio, full size outdoor 3G pitch, dedicated seminar rooms and staff offices can be found within a 100 metres radius of each other.
- This BSc Sport Coaching is important for students who are interested in coaching, personal training, or teaching children in or out of a school setting.
- The course aims to enhance your employability, specifically within the sport coaching, teaching and those seeking to pursue a career and/or further study in a performance coaching setting.
- You will also develop broad transferrable skills on the programme that previous students have found really useful in careers beyond sport.
- Lecturers on this course are highly qualified and experienced, and regularly present at international conferences, collaborate internationally and publish research in top academic journals.

You will study core coaching modules ‘Sport Coaching and Practitioner Pedagogy 2’, and ‘Developing Young People and Athletes through Sport’. You will also have the option to select a module from the Sport and Exercise Science course (Physiology or Biomechanics). Finally, you will undertake either an independent research project, or a negotiated work-based project.
On the programme you will be assessed by a range of assessment methods including practical coaching, producing teaching resources and planning, producing digital content, poster presentations, group and individual presentations, e-portfolios, online assessment, and problem-based learning tasks along more traditional methods.
As a Newman Sports Coaching graduate, you will be well-equipped for a wide range of careers in sports coaching and related areas. Your degree will provide you the foundation to pursue careers in coaching, personal training, or teaching children in or out of a school setting.

Entry Requirements
All applicants will need to have 120 credits at level 4 and 120 credits at level 5 in a relevant Foundation Degree or HND. To progress directly onto level 6 (third year of the degree) applicants should normally achieve an overall merit or distinction. Applicants not achieving this can enter at level 5 (second year of the degree programme).
All applicants intending to progress directly onto level 6 are required to attend and pass a bridging module prior to enrolment. This module focuses on research methods and academic writing. Applicants not achieving pass this module will enter the programme at level 5 (second year of the degree programme).
International Students
Newman University is not licenced by the UK Government to sponsor migrant students under the Student route and is therefore unable to accept applications from international students at present.

Course Fees
The full-time course fee for September 2024 is £9,250 per year.
For internal Newman foundation degree students choosing to progress on to the top-up degree the course fee is £7,200 for September 2024.
The University will review tuition fees and increase fees in line with any inflationary uplift as determined by the UK Government, if permitted by law or government policy, in subsequent years of your course. It is anticipated that such increases would be linked to RPI (the Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments).
