Understand your responsibilities as a Student Visa holder at Birmingham Newman.
This section outlines key compliance requirements, including engagement, travel, and visa conditions.
Student visa sponsorship and responsibilities
As your Student Visa sponsor, Birmingham Newman University is required to hold certain information about you, including copies of your immigration documents and up-to-date contact details. As a condition of your visa, you must inform the University promptly of any changes to your personal circumstances or immigration status.
You are required to attend and fully engage with your course. This is a condition of your Student visa. Failure to comply with Home Office rules or visa conditions may affect your immigration history and could impact your ability to enter or remain in the UK in the future. Further information about Student visa conditions and sponsor responsibilities is available on the UKCISA website.
Your eVisa
You will be issued with an eVisa by the Home Office. Once you receive access to your eVisa, you must log in and check that all information is correct, including:
Your name and date of birth
The length of your visa
Your work conditions (this should state “No work permitted”)
Your visa should normally be granted for the full length of your course plus four months after the course end date. If you identify any errors, you must take steps to have them corrected as soon as possible.
Work restrictions
If you hold a Student visa and are studying at Birmingham Newman University, you are not permitted to undertake any work, whether paid or unpaid, at any time during your studies.
This includes, but is not limited to:
Paid employment
Voluntary or unpaid work (including roles within the Students’ Union or University departments)
Self-employment or freelance work
You may only undertake placements or practical training that are an integral and assessed part of your course, where these are explicitly permitted under the terms of your visa and recorded on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
You are not eligible to apply for the Graduate Route following completion of your course.
Breaching your visa conditions may result in withdrawal of sponsorship and may have serious immigration consequences, including curtailment of your visa.
Travel during your studies
If you intend to leave the UK during your studies, you should contact the University in advance to ensure you have the appropriate written confirmation where required.
If you complete your studies and leave the UK before your graduation ceremony but have time remaining on your Student visa and intend to return to attend graduation, you should request a graduation letter from the Compliance Team.
Registration and reporting duties
The University has a legal responsibility to report to the Home Office any student who fails to register as required. If you are unable to register on time, you must contact the University immediately so that appropriate advice and support can be provided.
