Birmingham Newman University Ranked Sixth in National Social Mobility Index
Birmingham Newman University has been ranked sixth in the prestigious 2024 English Social Mobility Index published by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI). The Index highlights the university’s significant contribution to breaking down barriers and improving opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The English Social Mobility Index, compiled by London South Bank University, measures the social distance travelled by socio-economically disadvantaged graduates across England, combining metrics such as access, continuation rates, and graduate outcomes. This year’s ranking places Birmingham Newman University among the top-performing institutions in the country, alongside fellow West Midlands universities, showcasing the region’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and driving positive change.

The 2024 Index introduces an updated methodology, including regional salary weighting, providing a more accurate reflection of the challenges and opportunities across the country. The National Social Mobility Index result follows a series of recent awards, including:
- Ranked 1st for Student Satisfaction 2025 – Good University Guide
- 1st University in the West Midlands and 7th in England for full-time student satisfaction in the National Student Survey*
- Achieving the largest rise of any UK university in both The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025 and the Guardian University Guide 2025
