Ronnie Meechan

Biography

Ronnie Meechan is the Head of School (Associate Dean) Nursing and Allied Health within the Faculty of Arts, Society and Professional Studies. Ronnie is a qualified Adult and Mental Health Nurse. Before joining Newman University Ronnie was the Head of Education in the Institute of Clinical Sciences at the University of Birmingham and the Head of Pre-Registration Nursing at the University of Birmingham. Ronnie’s other roles in Higher Education have included being the Deputy Dean in Nursing at BPP University, Associate Professor Student Assessment and Quality Assurance at Kingston and St Georges University London, Programme Leader at the University of Worcester and Senior Lecturer positions at London South Bank University. Before moving into academia Ronnie worked in the NHS in a variety of clinical roles, including Oncology, Haematology, Palliative Care, Trauma and Orthopaedics, General Surgery and Mental Health Services. Ronnie also worked in the Netherlands for two years as a Registered Nurse.

Ronnie was recognised for his outstanding contribution to student learning and student voice whilst at the University of Birmingham in 2020 and was awarded the HEFi teacher of the year award. In 2015 Ronnie was a shortlisted finalist for the National Student Nursing Times Awards by nursing students at Kingston University London for his contribution to student voice and student support.

Ronnie has a significant amount of experience of working internationally including working with partners across Europe. He has also worked with education providers in North America, the Middle East, and Africa.

Ronnie maintains links with practice through his work undertaking his role as a Nursing and Midwifery Council Registrant Visitor.

Research Interests

Ronnie is an active researcher with a focus on educational research (pharmacology and medicines management and clinical skills/simulation with healthcare students) as well as exploring the impact that Image Based Sexual Abuse (IBSA) has on the impact on LGBTQ individuals mental health and well-being. Ronnie’s PhD is affiliated with the Risk, Abuse and Violence research programme in the School of Nursing at the University of Birmingham and Ronnie has been fortunate enough to contribute to key conference presentations, key texts/publications, reviews to legislation as well as working with organisations who support individuals who have experienced IBSA.  Ronnie has completed a three year programme for nurses who are undertaking doctoral studies with the European Academy of Nursing Science. Ronnie has also been selected to take part in an International Student Training Network (ISTN). It is a programme of the International Partnership for Queer Youth Resilience (INQYR), and includes a research partnership between universities and community organizations across Canada, the US, the UK, Mexico, and Australia.

Ronnie maintains his registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). He is also a member of the Royal College of Nursing. Ronnie is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and he is also a member of the European Academy of Nursing Scientists.
