Biography

As an author of Nationalism, Militarism and Masculinity (Palgrave, 2019) and an interdisciplinary social scientist, Dr Stratis Efthymiou specializes in militarism and gender, radical movements, and policing. He holds a BA in Sociology, a MSc in Comparative and Cross Cultural Research Methods, and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Sussex. He has a range of consultancy expertise in security sector reform, policing, militarism and peacebuilding.

Research Interests

Working at the intersection of academia and consultancy by applying Sociology and Criminology to policy, Dr Efthymiou’s research interests lie in militarism, gender, and radicalisation. His research has been featured in numerous international higher-ranking journals, including European Security, Critical Military Studies, Defense Studies, and Political and Military Sociology. His book 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦, 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐂𝐲𝐩𝐫𝐮𝐬 was published by Palgrave Macmillan and translated to German by Springer (2023).

Dr Efthymiou is passionate about delivering impact through policy, especially in the security sector. For example, as an advisor to the Cyprus Minister of Defense, he designed the welfare policy of the army, leading to increased social contribution of the military and better civil-military relations.
