Biography
Tammia brings over 12 years of experience in prison education, having taught across several custodial institutions, including HMP Birmingham and HMP Oakwood, one of the largest prisons in Europe. Throughout her career, she has worked closely with a diverse range of prisoners, including high-risk offenders. Many of those she has supported have gone on to successfully gain employment following their release.
Before joining Birmingham Newman University, Tammia taught criminology at both further and higher education levels.
She holds a BA and MA in Criminology, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), and is a recognised Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE).
In addition to her academic work, Tammia is an active member of the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB), a role that involves monitoring prison conditions and the treatment of prisoners. This position ensures she remains closely informed about current issues and developments within the prison system, further enriching her teaching and research.

Her teaching and research interests include prison education, rehabilitation and desistance, alternatives to incarceration, and the role of the criminal justice system within society.
Teaching
Tammia has extensive experience teaching a wide range of core and optional criminology modules, including Rehabilitation and Desistance, Prisons and Punishment, Policing and Social Control, Equality and Diversity in Criminal Justice, Penology, the Criminal Justice Environment, and Youth Crime.
She is committed to delivering engaging, inclusive lessons that promote discussion and encourage students to think critically and analytically about key issues in criminology and criminal justice.
Administrative Responsibilities
Tammia serves as a personal tutor, offering academic and pastoral support to students throughout their studies. She provides guidance on both personal and professional development, helping students navigate their academic journey and plan for future careers.
She is a module lead, responsible for the design, delivery, and assessment of several core modules. This includes developing course materials, delivering lectures, organising assessments, and ensuring modules meet academic standards and remain current and relevant to the field of criminology. Tammia is also actively involved in curriculum design and review, contributing to the continuous improvement of the programme.
Her responsibilities also include overseeing the development, administration, and marking of assessments in line with university regulations, ensuring fairness and academic integrity. She supervises both undergraduate and postgraduate research projects, offering expert guidance on research methods and supporting students to meet their academic goals.
Tammia plays an active role in student recruitment and selection, participating in open days, interviews, and outreach activities. She also contributes to departmental operations by helping schedule lectures, seminars, and tutorials, and provides mentorship and support to new staff and visiting lecturers, contributing to their integration and professional development.
