Biography

Tammia brings over 12 years of experience in prison education, having taught at multiple institutions, including HMP Birmingham and HMP Oakwood, one of Europe’s largest prisons. During her career, she has worked with a diverse range of prisoners, including high-risk offenders, many of whom have successfully secured employment upon release.

Before joining Birmingham Newman University, Tammia taught criminology at both further and higher education levels. Her areas of expertise include prison systems, rehabilitation, punishment strategies, alternatives to incarceration, and the criminal justice system’s role in society. She holds a BA and MA in Criminology, a PGCE, and is a recognised Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE).

Tammia has extensive experience teaching a variety of core and optional criminology modules, including rehabilitation and desistance, policing and social control, equality and diversity in criminal justice, penology, the criminal justice environment, and youth crime.

Research Interests

Current and recent research interests based on identifiable individual or collaborative research projects, including supervised doctoral research projects. Also, research grants from UK research councils, European research funds and charities may be included.

Administrative Responsibilities

Administrative responsibilities include acting as a personal tutor for students, providing academic and pastoral support, guiding them through their studies, and assisting with their personal and professional development. The lecturer is responsible for coordinating and managing specific modules, which involves developing course materials, delivering lectures, organising assessments, and ensuring that the module meets academic standards.

Participate in the design and revision of course curricula, ensuring that content remains current and relevant to the field of criminology. Oversee the development, administration, and grading of assessments, ensuring fairness and adherence to university regulations.

Involvement in student recruitment and selection, participating in open days and interviews. Ensure that teaching, learning, and assessment practices meet institutional and external quality assurance standards.

Supervises undergraduate and postgraduate research projects, providing guidance on research methodologies and ensuring that students meet their academic goals. Collaborate with the department to schedule lectures, seminars, and tutorials. Lastly, the lecturer supports new faculty members and/or VL through mentorship and contributes to their professional development.
