The Introductory Certificate in Counselling focuses on developing counselling skills by providing a solid foundation in the key aspects of the discipline. It introduces students to counselling theories and practice as well as to the ethical and professional context of counselling in the UK. The Introductory Certificate in Counselling awards 20 credits at Level 4.  It lasts one semester (thirteen weeks).

The programme is suitable for a wide range of students:

  • Introduces students to key approaches in the discipline.
  • Learning is experiential and practical as well as academic.
  • Regular opportunities to develop counselling and interpersonal skills.
  • First step towards a professional training in counselling.

The course focuses on learning counselling skills within an ethical and professional context. Core topics include:

  • The practice of counselling skills
  • Introduction to key theories in counselling
  • Counselling in context
  • Self-awareness

 

Sessions are normally held on one evening per week from 6.15 to 9.30pm. The course runs at two entry points during the year: September and January.

Please note: There is an minimum 80% attendance requirement on this course.

To assist in the all-round development of skills, students are assessed using a variety of methods including traditional essays, personal reflections, journals and taped counselling sessions.

The 80% attendance requirement ensures that students have sufficient opportunity to develop new skills and reach the level required for further professional training

On successful completion of this programme, students may apply to study on the Foundation Degree in Integrative Counselling, MSc Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies or the PGDip/MSc Integrative Counselling at Newman University. Alternatively, the acquisition of counselling skills can lead to career development, diversification or progression in existing job roles. Examples might include the development of pastoral or support aspects of a role using embedded counselling skills such as those acquired on the Introductory Certificate.
