Our English degrees at Newman University, Birmingham invite you to think about how literature and language shapes the world around you, and your place within it. You will have the opportunity to study a range of texts from different cultures, perspectives, and periods, with particular emphasis on modern and contemporary writing. Employability opportunities and careers advice are embedded into the course, and you will receive excellent tuition and support with your studies.
Our Applied Writing degree encourages you to find your voice. Applied Writing reflects on the distinct ways in which writing and creative practice has contributed to social change and historical activism. It provides opportunities for students to direct their own writing to the crucial issues of our time from the rise of identity politics and cultural conflict, to the social care and climate crises. This practice-based programme enables students to develop and apply their creative skills to important social issues taking both a local and global perspective.
