Welcome to Psychology at Newman! The Psychology team are looking forward to meet you in person on campus. My name is Lorna Dodd and I am Head of Psychology, but if you are studying Single Honours Psychology BSc (Hons) – I will also be your programme leader. A programme leader is someone who oversees the programme and is there to offer guidance and support on the programme that you are studying.

For those of you studying Single Honours Psychology with Criminology BSc (Hons), Stella Williams is the programme leader. Stella places a strong emphasis on the importance of student support. This emphasis not only drove her to work at Newman, but also has been reflected in her research interests. Her publications include exploration of student engagement and employability. These interests extend into areas of employee selection and engagement.

For those of you studying Single Honours Psychology and Childhood Studies BSc (Hons), Kate McGarry is the programme leader. Kate’s main research areas are mother-infant interactions within emotional based disorders, social processing and theory of mind.

As well as your programmes leaders there are a number of key psychology staff that play an important part in your degree journey. During your time you will meet Gurkiran Birdi, Chris Higton, Varinia Heidel, Alex Kirby, Claudia Lega, Flobela Teixeira and Mel West. Mel is also the programme leader for the MSc Clinical Applications of Psychology.

The psychology team look forward to working with you on your degree programme. Your main teaching will take place on campus. But this face-to-face campus based delivery will be supported by technology / online activities. Effective teaching and learning often integrates technology and digital media with traditional tutor-led classroom activities, giving you more flexibility to customise your learning experiences.
