Welcome

PGCE Primary - Welcome 2022

The primary team consists of 14 tutors all with an individual specialism. You will meet all of them during your initial induction as they will come to introduce themselves and say hello. They will see them throughout your course as they will teach on your academic modules. You will also be assigned one of the tutors as you academic personal tutor who will be on the journey with you throughout the course.

For those studying a PGCE with Newman, there will soon be an opportunity to let us know more information about you (such as term time address/access to a car etc). We use this information when allocating you to your placement schools. A link will appear soon on this page to download the additional information form which should be returned to fed@newman.ac.uk.

For those who are following a School Direct route, the programme is negotiated between the lead school and the university. Your school should be in touch about arrangements for both school induction and the start of term. The school will take a greater responsibility for supporting certain aspects of the programme, but you will still have the support of Newman University and will undertake the Master’s level modules of the programme at university as well as university-based training sessions designed to support your professional development. Depending on your lead school and the partnership arrangement, you may also access additional university-based sessions that will prepare you for aspects of the core and foundation subject curriculum.

Finally, we would like to extend our warmest welcome to you in advance of starting your training. We have a passion for education and teaching at Newman that you will experience when you arrive. The course is challenging and will take you on a rewarding personal journey so enjoy a restful summer vacation and we will see you in September, if not before.

Best Wishes from the Primary team

Teacher training courses are a full-time commitment. When you are on placement you will be expected to attend all day Monday to Friday.

For on campus activities students are split into groups at enrolment. Each group will have its own timetable where some aspects can change on a weekly basis. Normally classes will be distributed across 4 days per week between 9am-5pm.

Full details of your individual academic timetable will be available on mynewman after you have completed online enrolment and set up your student login.

Dear Trainee,

Congratulations on securing a place on the PGCE Primary course at Newman University. The Primary ITTE team are looking forward to welcoming you to Newman University.

You will no doubt be excited about embarking on this journey to becoming an inspiring and effective classroom teacher and will be eager to get started in preparation for a challenging but rewarding year. The Newman PGCE Core and PGCE School Direct courses are structured to provide a strong preparation for your first teaching post but if you would like to begin thinking and preparing for the year ahead we have a few suggestions for you.

It is always a good idea to do some pre-course preparation before September. The primary tutor team at Newman suggest the following:

1. Have a look at the National Curriculum and/or the Early Years Framework. Both are available online and it is a great idea to read through and become more familiar with the primary curriculum:

National Curriculum

Early Years Foundation Stage Framework

2. Have a think about your subject knowledge. There are some great websites which can help you to think about any gaps in your knowledge or which may just help you to feel more confident. Here are just a few- click on the relevant subject for a link to some additional resources:

3. Learn about different resources and activities which can really enhance your teaching. Explore these two websites:

Primary Resources

Teaching Ideas

4. Write down your questions! Every time you think of a question about your course, note it down somewhere, then bring your questions to the induction sessions in September where you will have the opportunity to speak to tutors and staff from other university departments.
