If you’re hoping to become a secondary school teacher in English, Maths, Science with Physics, Chemistry or biology, Religious Education, PE or Humanities you could qualify within three years through this undergraduate degree route.
Our BA (Hons) Secondary Teaching (QTS) courses offer you a gateway into the teaching profession as a qualified secondary teacher with a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), allowing you to teach in England and Wales.
Develop your knowledge and learn the art of teaching
You will study a range of undergraduate subject specific and pedagogical modules that build on your current knowledge as you learn the practical, professional, and academic skills of teaching.
You will also spend in total a 120 days of the course on school placement developing your practice in order to become an inspirational secondary teacher.

On this course you will:
- Be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status which allows you teach in secondary schools in England and Wales.

English with Secondary Education (QTS)
English demands creativity, passion for literature and a deep understanding of the technicalities of language. In order to teach the subject, you will need to be able to examine the mechanics of language and literature and be able to make these intelligible to children. The course will give a thorough grounding in the subjects required by the English National Curriculum alongside a critical review of alternative approaches to teaching English.
Mathematics with Secondary Education (QTS)
Mathematics gives practical and theoretical ideas for the teaching of mathematics. It gives space to discuss the variety of approaches which can be used in the secondary mathematics classroom. You will develop an understanding of problem solving including creative and logical approaches to the subject. Combining theory and practice, you will investigate the nature of a mathematics curriculum and be able to plan, deliver and assess effective lessons. This course aims to allow you to become a dynamic teacher of mathematics who uses varied approaches to ensure pupil success.
Science with Physics with Secondary Education (QTS)
This course provides the practical, professional, and academic skills needed to prepare you to become a science teacher.
You will also have the opportunity to develop your skills within a real-world school setting, with dedicated placements that allow you to gain vital experience.
You will develop an understanding of science pedagogical practice to educate young people in a range of learning environments.
The course will build on your existing knowledge of physics and provide the opportunity to develop a sound academic foundation on which you will build your teaching skills.
Religious Education with Secondary Education (QTS)
Physical Education with Secondary Education (QTS)
Our Physical Education course provides the practical, professional, and academic skills that are needed to prepare you to become a secondary school PE teacher.
You will also have the opportunity to develop your skills within a real-world school setting, with dedicated placements that allow you to gain vital experience ahead of your teaching career.
You will develop an understanding of the pedagogical practice to physically educate young people in a range of learning environments.
The course will build on your existing knowledge of sport activity and provide the opportunity to develop a sound academic foundation on which you will build your teaching skills.
BA (Hons) Humanities (History, Geography and RE) with Secondary Education (QTS)

Humanities encompasses the disciplines of Geography, History and RE as well as the commonalities that unite all of them. Whilst each of these subjects has its own separate identity, all of them are broadly about studying aspects of life and the human experience.
You will develop an understanding of the individual character of each of the three subjects and how to teach the substantive knowledge (content) of them as well as the disciplinary knowledge (skills) related to each.
The course aims to give you a grounding in each of the three subjects, but also allow you to choose a primary specialism from amongst them in order to equip you as both a specialist but also someone who can teach out of their subject.

This course provides the practical, professional, and academic skills needed to prepare you to become a science teacher whilst undertaking a focused undergraduate Biology curriculum.
The course will build on your existing knowledge of Biology and provide the opportunity to develop a sound academic foundation on which you will build your teaching skills.
You will develop your skills within a real-world school setting, with dedicated placements that allow you to apply and demonstrate your understanding of science pedagogical practice to educate young people in a range of learning environments.

The Undergraduate programme has both a pedagogical and practical aspect. Over the three years you will have regular placements, equating to a minimum of 120* days in school, where you will develop your understanding of the subject alongside the professional skills required to teach.
In addition to your main school placements, you will have the opportunity to experience post-16 education, primary school settings and alternative placements. Furthermore, you will develop the skills required to enhance your own professional understanding and develop your own areas of professional interest.
*120 days in school maybe subject to change by the DfE.
The Department for Education is offering a Levelling Up Premium worth up to £3,000 tax-free annually for maths, physics, chemistry and computing teachers working in disadvantaged schools in England, for the first 5 years of their career.
Eligible teachers will be able to claim payments each year in academic years 2022/23 to 2024/25. Higher payments will be offered to teachers working in Education Investment Areas and the most disadvantaged schools nationally.

Entry Requirements
A Level 3 qualification in the named degree subject area, for example A Level English for Secondary Education English 11-16 with Post 16 enhancement (with recommendation for QTS).
The University accepts appropriate T Levels as part of its usual entry requirements.
GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade 4 (or C) or above (or recognised equivalents). Please be aware that whilst these GCSEs are not mandatory at application point, these qualifications must be obtained by enrolment. See our page on additional GCSE Equivalency test information.
School experience is not a requirement for entry to the programme. However, having experience in a school will support your preparation for training as a teacher.
At interview you will be asked about any experiences that you have with school aged children and your understanding of teaching within your chosen age range. The quality and variety of your personal statement is an important factor in the decision to call you to interview.
You will need to obtain Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance and meet the requirements for fitness to train to teach prior to starting the course and be assured against a set of fundamental maths and English skills by the end of your PGCE. Course Fees
The full-time course fee for September 2024 is £9,250 per year.
The University will review tuition fees and increase fees in line with any inflationary uplift as determined by the UK Government, if permitted by law or government policy, in subsequent years of your course. It is anticipated that such increases would be linked to RPI (the Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments).

Additional Information
To ensure that the course content is as up-to-date and relevant to current teaching theory and practice as possible, this course will be re-validated at least every five years or sooner, if external changes require it.
Work-related placements in school and visits to other education settings will require some travel. Placements may be up to 1.5hrs hour from a student’s term-time address.
