ITE Offer Information
Teacher Training Offers: regulatory conditions
In addition to your qualifications and any other academic conditions for entry, all offers of a place are subject to regulatory criteria from the Department for Education, including:
- Health Questionnaire for fitness to train to teach
- Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance
Health Questionnaire
We must ensure that students training to teach have the health and physical capacity to train to teach and will not put children and young people at risk of harm. To comply with this duty, we ask all applicants to complete a self-declared questionnaire before a place can be confirmed. This questionnaire will form the initial health assessment. If your responses raise any significant concerns about meeting the fitness to train to teach criteria, you will be referred to our Occupational Health specialists to discuss any additional support or adjustments that could be made.
Once you have accepted your Conditional Offer, Admissions will contact you to complete the Occupational Health check.
DBS clearance
As part of our duties to safeguard and protect the welfare of children we are required to consider a criminal records check and any children’s barred list information from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). If you already have an enhanced DBS certificate and subscribe to the annual update service you can show it directly to Registry staff. If not, you can apply for a new DBS online with us. There are two options:
- ID verified at Newman campus = £55
- ID verification at a Post Office = £61
After payment you will receive an email with a link to the Know Your People website, the organisation ID and access code needed to register. After registration, you will be able to access the online application form for your DBS check. Once you’ve completed the application form, you will need to get your ID verified either at the Student Helpdesk or at the Post Office depending which payment option you’ve chosen. Please note that bank statements, council tax statements and utility bills must have been posted to you. Online printed statements cannot be accepted for ID verification for DBS checks.
The DBS process can take several weeks, or longer over the summer, so it is important to start as soon as possible. We are unable to speed up the external aspects of these checks and if they are not completed in time you will be unable to start.
Childcare disqualification
A small number of people who have been disqualified from a childcare role will have been added to a restricted government list of individuals barred from childcare roles. We will check this list closer to the start and any applicant on that list will not be permitted to train to teach, unless they have a specific waiver from Ofsted.
Further information on the health questionnaire and DBS checks is available below. If you have any questions regarding any of the regulatory requirements please contact Admissions on 0121 476 2005 or email admissions@newman.ac.uk. If you have already applied for a DBS with us and have a query regarding this please email Registry Support at registry@newman.ac.uk.
