Welcome to Birmingham Newman University’s Foundation year – we are thrilled to welcome you to your first year at university.

Module delivery

From January to April, you will be working across a long semester, exploring ideas in education and delving into the impact of the digital world.

Then, during the summer term, from May to July, your focus will shift to discussing issues related to social inequality.

Throughout the year, you will have the chance to develop a wide range of skills, including academic writing, presentations, and the production of digital media, such as podcasts and mini-documentaries.

Within your degree tutor group, you’ll build essential skills and explore the core concepts of your chosen field.

Collaborating with colleagues and peers in your degree programme, you’ll be introduced to a range of ideas and assessment styles.

As you approach the conclusion of your foundation year, you will embark on a degree project, showcasing your newfound knowledge and skills.

Your teaching team

The foundation team includes foundation lecturers and your degree subject lecturers from across the university.

You’ll work with both foundation and subject lecturers across your foundation year.

Upon enrolment, you’ll be assigned a personal tutor who will guide you through the course details and help you set your expectations for the upcoming year.

Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with tutors specialised in your chosen discipline.

Before you start

We eagerly await your arrival in January. In the meantime, you can find more information about starting your degree on our pre-induction website.
