Welcome to Sport Coaching (BSc) at Birmingham Newman University.
The Sport & Health subject area at Birmingham Newman is an experienced and friendly community.
We know that the relationship you have with staff with make a big difference to your university experience. All staff are always keen to get to know you and your interests.
We work with lots of regional and national partners for applied work and research. This enhances the work we can all do in the laboratory and classroom – so please get to know them.

This activity aims to help students to understand why physical activity is an important human behaviour.
This will be taught in greater depth throughout your modules
- View the Physical Activity Guidelines for the UK and open the UK Chief Medical Officers’ report (2019) available here: Physical activity guidelines – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).
- Read the ‘Introduction’ chapter (p.12-p.20) of the UK Chief Medical Officers’ report. After reading the section you should answer the following questions:
- What are the links between physical activity and health? State the health benefits of physical activity mentioned in this report
- What types of physical activity are important for our health? Does all activity matter? Is exercise and sport important?
- Why is sedentary behaviour important as well as physical activity?
- View the Physical Activity Guidelines for the adults in the UK. You can find the infographic for adult physical activity from the gov.uk website here: Physical activity guidelines – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk). How active should adults be? Answer the following questions:
- How many minutes should adults be active for per week?
- What types of activity should adults be doing to benefit health? And at what intensities?
- Are there any specific types of activities adults should be doing and why should they be done?

SPU412: Exploring Sport, Exercise & Physical Activity
This module explores the key skills required for studying at university. Within 3 hours of contact time per week, we will explore your strengths and the develop new skills to help your university career. This module encourages you to reflect on your skills and work together in a series of interactive sessions. It also develops your skills in investigating things that interest you.
- 3 hours of in-person contact sessions per week.
SPU414: Sport & Exercise Biomechanics
This module introduces human anatomy, function, and systems related to exercise. Using knowledge from physiology and biomechanics, this module is taught in our Human Performance Laboratory and uses lecture and practical sessions.
- 3 hours of in-person contact sessions per week.
SPU405: Pedagogy of PE & Coaching
This module focuses on the knowledge and practice related to Physical Education and Sports Coaching. You will have the opportunity to discuss the role of Physical Education teachers and sports coaches. Throughout the module, there will be opportunities to apply theoretical constructs to practical situations.
- 1 hour of in-person lecture per week plus 2 hours of in-person practical sessions fortnightly.
SPU417: Introduction to Sport & Exercise Psychology
This module will explore human psychology and its influence on participation and engagement in various physical activity contexts. We will use lectures and practical seminars to explore your experiences in sport and exercise.
- 3 hours of in-person contact sessions per week.
HeadStart – Monday 1 to Friday 5 September 2025
Headstart is a programme aimed at introducing our new students to University life. We understand that our students come from all walks of life and have personal and individual aspirations for taking this important step in their journey.
This programme is an opportunity to:
- Talk to staff before starting university
- Meet other students
- Understand and navigate the campus
- Find out about the support available
- Start getting comfortable with university life
