PE and Sports Studies

The Physical Education and Sports Studies courses provide a broad, yet in-depth study of the major disciplines within sports and exercise science. The approach is one of applied scientific enquiry, making clear links between laboratory based studies and the impact of sporting performance from beginner to elite level athletes across a range of sports.

A feature of physical education and sports studies at Newman is the excellent relationship between staff and students. Staff know students on an individual basis, and students are given the opportunity to improve their understanding of sport and exercise science by participating in research with staff. This collaborative approach leads to high quality work
being produced by students when they undertake individual projects.

The Physical Education and Sports Studies subject area is involved in a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Developing applied knowledge to aid students’ understanding of sport and exercise science, work placements are embedded in all courses, allowing students to gain relevant, graduate level experience in the sports industry and refine their career choices. Newman also works closely with a range of sports teams providing sports science support to junior level and elite sports people including Coventry Blaze ice hockey team, Trojan mixed martial arts team, Lordswood and Solihull basketball academies, Warwickshire hurling team, Great Britain U-17 ladies basketball squad as well as a number of individual athletes. This work involves testing and monitoring of different components of fitness key to their chosen sports across the training year. This information then informs the training and conditioning programs of the individuals/teams. A number of professional coaches also deliver practical elements across the different programmes.

In addition, level two and three coaches work with a range of focus sports at Newman including basketball, football, hockey and rugby.

If you wish to undertake a MPhil/PhD in Physical Education and Sports Studies, please contact Dr Lorayne Woodfield regarding potential research.
