Team

As a physiotherapy student at Newman University, you will join the School of Nursing and Allied Health (SoNAH).

Both Becky and I really hope that you are looking forward to starting your degree with us, and starting the next chapter of your lives.

During your first few days, we will introduce you other members of the SoNAH such as Ronnie Meechan (Head of SoNAH) and Matthew Aldridge (Head of Placements and Simulation) as well as other members of the teaching team.

Brief Summary

During Semester 1 you will be introduced to 4 modules:

Introduction to Professional Healthcare Practice‘, ‘Human Function in Health and Disease‘ ‘Assessment and Evaluation‘ and ‘Person Centred Rehabilitation‘.

All modules are taught face-to-face on campus and are a mix of theory and practical sessions. Outside of the taught sessions, you will be guided to undertake ‘pre session’ and ‘post session’ tasks to support your learning.

During the November of Semester 1, you will also experience your first practice based learning block – a 2 week ‘care based placement’ where you will have the opportunity to put theory into practice.

Although your main timetabled days are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday during Semester 1, you will required to attend mandatory immunisation and training sessions which may take place on a Wednesday and Friday.

Pre-Course Reading/Activities

There is no compulsory reading to complete prior to the start of Semester 1. However, you will be expected to be familiar with the organisation (cells, tissues, organs, systems) and functions of the human body.

Don’t panic, we are sure you already have this knowledge from your previous qualifications but if you need to refresh your understanding, ‘Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology by Martini, Nath and Bartholomew, or YouTube resources such as ‘Khan Academy’ or ‘Crash Course’ in Anatomy and Physiology may be helpful.

The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy website (https://www.csp.org.uk) has lots of useful information relevant to you as a student physiotherapist. Having a browse will introduce you to some current issues that are affecting the profession which we will cover during your first year.

Planned Online Meetings

We would like to invite you to you join us for a ‘Welcome’ session on Tuesday 22nd August 2023 via TEAMS. This will be an opportunity to ask any questions before your course starts and will be hosted by the programme leader, Annabel Masson.

The session will run twice at 10-11am or 5-6pm.

22/8/23 – 10-11am – please email a.masson@staff.newman.ac.uk for the link
22/8/23 – 5- 6pm – please email a.masson@staff.newman.ac.uk for the link

Weekly Planner and Timetable

This is an overview only. You must refer to your individual timetable as there are a number of weeks where the module teaching day will vary to
provide you with the best possible experience. Exact timings of the sessions are also available on your individual timetable.

There may be instances throughout the year (for example, mandatory training and immunisations) where you are required to attend University or other venues on Wednesdays and/or Friday. These will be communicated to you in advance by the programme team.

Timetable

Even if your course team are not expecting you to be in during Welcome Week on Tuesday 19th September, we strongly encourage you to come in and participate in our Student Union Fresher’s Fair.

Running between 10am and 3pm, it will give you a great insight into the Student Union, its societies and its engagement with community groups and employers. You can find out more at Newman Students’ Union – Your Voice.
